영어는 영어로 이해해야 빨리 배울 수 있어요... 한국어로 해석하는 습관을 최대한 빨리 벗어나야 됩니다. 하지만 처음부터 원어민(성인)을 대상으로 작성된 글을 읽기란 부단한 노력이 필요하고 영어 사전과 씨름을 해야 하기 때문에 영어에 흥미를 잃기 쉽습니다. 사람들이 보통 그럴 때 동화책부터 읽으라고 하는데 저는 그것보다는 성인(원어민)을 위한 글과 외국인을 위한 글을 동시에 비교하면서 읽기를 추천합니다.
Simple English로 작성된 위키문서와 원본 위키문서를 비교하면서 읽는 거죠(이게 가장 자료가 많은 것 같습니다)... 1930년 영국에서 개발된 BASIC English(기본어휘 850개)와 VOA(미국의 소리 라디오방송)에서 개발한 Special English(기본어휘 1,500개)를 혼합해서 만들어진 것이 바로 Simple English 입니다. 기본 단어가 2,000개가 넘지 않기 때문에 영어를 잘 모르는 사람도 기본적인 영어 실력만 되면 읽을 수 있습니다. https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page <-Simple English로 작성된 위키문서가 12만개 정도 있습니다.
기존 위키피디아에 있던 영어 문서를 다시 Simple English로 작성했기 때문에 같은 주제를 놓고 서로 비교하면서 읽을 수 있습니다.
영어가 워낙 국제적으로 수요가 많다보니 일단 초급자들이 빨리 배울 수 있게 이런 연구가 많이 있었던 것 같아요. BASIC English, VOA Special Englsh, Specialized English, Global English. 기타등등 -_- Basic English (Business Academic Scientific International Commercial) 같은 경우 윈스턴 처칠이 하버드 대학에서 이걸 국제표준으로 하자고 주장했었죠... 영어가 워낙 여러가지 언어가 섞여서 만들어진 언어다 보니 쓸데없이 유의어나 동일한 의미의 다른 단어들이 많고 또 영어를 학습하는 외국인들에게도 혼란스러운 경우가 많아서 Simple English를 만들었다고 하는데 여기에 사용된 단어들은 보통 비 영어권 학교에서 영어 수업중에 가르치는 필수단어 목록과 실제로 매우 유사하다고 합니다. 처음 영어를 시작하는 사람이라면 단어를 많이 아는 것보다 영어 자체를 이해하는게 우선이기 때문에 단어수를 줄이면 분명 시간을 많이 절약할 수 있습니다.

다만 VOA는 미국정부에서 운영하는 라디오 방송이라. 뉴스전달에 중점을 두고 있기 때문에 정치, 경제, 외교, 군사관련 단어가 약간 있습니다.
대신 Specialized English 라고해서 Special English 와 거의 똑같은 단어 목록을 사용하고 있지만 좀 더 국제적으로 통용 되는 단어들로 개조된 단어목록으로 컨텐츠는 제공하는 http://spotlightenglish.com/가 좋은 대안이 될 것 같습니다.(영국식 영어와 미국식 영어가 혼합되어 있고 발음도 VOA보다 더 정확합니다)

Jupiter
Jupiter is the fifth planet from the Sun and the largest in the Solar System.
It is a giant planet with a mass one-thousandth that of the Sun, but two and
a half times that of all the other planets in the Solar System combined.
Jupiter is a gas giant, along with Saturn, with the other two giant planets,
Uranus and Neptune, being ice giants. Jupiter was known to astronomers
of ancient times.[12] The Romans named it after their god Jupiter.[13]
When viewed from Earth, Jupiter can reach an apparent magnitude of
−2.94, bright enough for its reflected light to cast shadows,[14] and
making it on average the third-brightest object in the night sky after the
Moon and Venus.
Jupiter is primarily composed of hydrogen with a quarter of its mass being
helium, though helium comprises only about a tenth of the number of
molecules. It may also have a rocky core of heavier elements,[15] but like
the other giant planets, Jupiter lacks a well-defined solid surface. Because
of its rapid rotation, the planet's shape is that of an oblate spheroid (it has
a slight but noticeable bulge around the equator). The outer atmosphere is
visibly segregated into several bands at different latitudes, resulting in
turbulence and storms along their interacting boundaries. A prominent
result is the Great Red Spot, a giant storm that is known to have existed
since at least the 17th century when it was first seen by telescope.
Surrounding Jupiter is a faint planetary ring system and a powerful
magnetosphere. Jupiter has at least 67 moons, including the four large
Galilean moons discovered by Galileo Galilei in 1610. Ganymede, the
largest of these, has a diameter greater than that of the planet Mercury.
